Douglas A.S. Paterson, Q.C.
Except for 3 years at Robson Hall Law School (University of Manitoba) and 1 year in University of Calgary, Doug has been in Brandon since 1948.
One of 3 active boys (Jack – RCMP Staff Sargent and Brian – School Principal Brandon School Divison), scholastics and sports were his main interests; mostly hockey, baseball and football then. Now it’s hockey, cross country skiing, biking, boating and hiking.
Sandi and Doug married in 1970, so camping and gardening became big, but then Scot was born in 1983 so he became the centre of it all.
Professionally, Doug has a B.A. (1969 Brandon University) and a LLB (1972 University of Manitoba). He was appointed counsel to MPI from 1973 to 1977 and then entered private practice. He has always liked variety, including estates, companies and land transfers, but most files seem to relate to civil litigation. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1984.
He and a friend developed the old Greyhound Bus Depot in 1984 and the offices have served the firm very well since.
While leaving much volunteer activity unmentioned, his main work has been with Canadian Mental Health Brandon (President), Kinsmen Club, Terminal Credit Union, kids ball and hockey coach, Brandon University Investment Committee (Pension), Legal Aid Manitoba (Director), Big Brothers Brandon (President), Art Gallery of Western Manitoba (Director), Brandon Chamber of Commerce (President), Brandon School Division (8 years – 2 as chair) and City of Brandon (12 years – 1 as Deputy Mayor).
As a civil litigator, Doug has appeared in all courts he can appear in, except The Tax Court of Canada.
